In a first round Skyhawk Conference Playoff game, Live Oak defeated the visiting Silicon Valley Durabos, 22-14. The second half saw more wide open play and the Durabos scored a try on an overlap in the first five minutes of play while Live Oak played down a man due to a major penalty. The conversion was good and the Acorn lead was cut to two, 9-7. Live Oak responded well to the Silicon Valley challenge, and returning to a full complement of players, scored 13 unanswered points on tries by Nic Muhn (Sr., fullback) and Alex Muhn and a penalty kick by Nick Ferguson (Jr., scrumhalf). The Acorns had a fifteen-point lead, 22-7, with 10 minutes to play. Silicon Valley rounded out the scoring with a converted try with 4 minutes to play. Final score, Live Oak 22, Silicon Valley 14. [3/22/07] +Live Oak 29, Chico State U19 27

Live Oak traveled to Chico to take on Chico States Under 19 squad in a non-league match. The match would serve as a curtain raiser for the varsity match between Sacramento State and Chico State. The game also marked the first-ever meeting between the Live Oak Rugby team and a college side.

The game was very competitive with both teams scoring 3 tries in the first half. Live Oak would take a 19-15 lead at the intermission on tries by Garrett Webb (Sr., flanker), Alex Muhn (Jr., center), and Mason Lammers (Jr., lock). Muhn also added two conversions.

Chico State came out strong to open the second half, scoring two unanswered tries and a conversion while forging a 27-19 lead with ten minutes left in the game. But the Acorns found their rhythm and responded with a try by Will Sparling (Sr., stand off) with 8 minutes left. Live Oak continued to pressure the Wildcats and with time winding down, Alex Muhn again crossed the try line for his second score of the game. Live Oak registered a tightly contested win against a determined opponent, 29-27. Alex Muhn was the high scorer with 14 points on two tries and two conversions.

Live Oak returns to Skyhawk Conference play against Peninsula Green on Saturday, April 5 at Live Oak High School. Game time has not yet been announced.

[3/15/07] +Live Oak 18, Silicon Valley 14

Last Saturday, Live Oak hosted the Silicon Valley Durabos in a Skyhawk Conference match-up. Playing into a fierce wind and amid nasty weather, Live Oak spotted Silicon Valley a 14-0 first half lead.

The Acorn ruggers responded positively to captain Ronnie Dominguez (Sr., prop) spirited half time words of encouragement, completely shutting down Silicon Valleys attack and scoring 18 unanswered points to win their third match in a row, 18-14. Alex Muhn accounted for all of Live Oaks scoring, tallying 2 tries, 2 penalty kicks, and a conversion.

Live Oak will try to extend their three game win streak this weekend as they travel to Chico to take on Chico States Under 19 team in a non-league match. [3/08/07] +Live Oak 19, College Park 17

Live Oak traveled to Willow Glen High School to continue Skyhawk Conference play against the College Park Ramblers. Live Oak was looking to even its league record to 2-2 while the Ramblers were looking for their first league win against three losses. Live Oak would score first at the 15-minute mark on a try by Alex Muhn (Jr., center). Muhn also made the conversion and the Acorns a 7-0 lead. Taking advantage of Acorn miscues, the Ramblers would knot the score at seven apiece on a converted try at the 25-minute mark. Live Oak quickly responded on a short, driving run for a try by Ronnie Dominguez (Sr., prop). Muhn converted and Live Oak had a 14-7 lead at the break.

The second half saw some lively action with both teams receiving yellow cards that forced them to play temporarily short-handed. College Park closed the gap to two points, 14-12, on an unconverted try ten minutes into the second period. The Acorns countered quickly on an unconverted try by Muhn and the Acorn lead was back to seven, 19-12. College Park closed out the scoring on a try as time expired and with Live Oak playing short a player. Final score, Live Oak 19, College Park 17.

Live Oak continues Skyhawk Conference play this Saturday against Silicon Valley at Live Oak High School. Game time is 4:PM

[3/01/07] +Live Oak 31, South Bay Exiles 5

Live Oak returned to Skyhawk Conference play last weekend hosting the South Bay Exiles of San Jose at Live Oak High School. The Acorn ruggers would be looking for their first conference win, while the Exiles were looking to keep pace with league leaders East Palo Alto and San Mateo.

Playing at full strength for the first time since their 33-0 win over Tri Valley to open the season on January 19, Live Oak took control of the game early, pinning the Exiles inside their own 22 meter area for nearly 15 minutes to open the game. Alex Muhn (Jr., center) slotted two penalty kicks to open up the scoring and Live Oak was ahead 6-0. South Bay quickly responded. The Exiles stand-off, aided by some shoddy tackling by the Acorns, weaved his way through the Live Oak defense to touch down a try between the posts. The conversion however was missed, and Live Oak held a thin 6-5 lead at the twenty- minute mark. Live Oak began to reassert itself and playing with the wind at their backs, continued to keep the pressure on the Exiles. Ronnie Dominguez (Sr., prop) would add a try at the twenty-five minute mark to increase the Acorn lead to six, 11-5. Live Oak missed another scoring chance just before half time when Eric Dean (Jr., 8-man) was held up in goal and could not touch down for a try on a blind side scrum move. The score remained 11-5 favoring the home side.

Playing into the wind in the second half, Live Oak continued to press the Exiles. South Bay found itself once again defending in the shadow of their goal posts and Nick Ferguson scored a try for Live Oak just minutes into the second half. The conversion was wide and the score stood at 16-5, Live Oak. The Acorns were beginning to show their superior speed and support at the breakdowns. Will Sparling (Sr., stand-off) and Zach Young (Sr., lock) continually crashed through the Exile defense, gaining huge chunks of territory and dragging defenders with them from line outs, back line moves, and open play. Sparlings hard work paid off with a try at the fifteen minute mark and Live Oak had a comfortable 21-5 lead. Dean would round out the Acorn scoring with a pair of tries to close out the match. Final score, Live Oak 31, South Bay Exiles 5.

[2/16/07] +San Mateo 17, Live Oak 14

Live Oak hosted the San Mateo Warriors in a key Skyhawk Rugby Conference match-up for both teams. San Mateo and Live Oak were trying to stay within striking distance of league leader East Palo Alto.

Live Oak, undaunted by the Warriors superior size, stood strong against the hard charging strikes by San Mateos forwards and scored first on a try by Erik Poulsen (So., lock). Will Sparling (Sr., stand-off) made the conversion and the Acorn ruggers had 7-0 lead fifteen minutes into the contest. San Mateo would score just before the intermission on an unconverted try and Live Oak held a slim 7-5 lead at half.

The second half saw more of the same hard, physical rugby from both sides and Live Oak was able to extend their lead to 14-5 at the twenty minute mark when Nick Ferguson (Jr., scrum half), caught the San Mateo side napping after a penalty against them and used a quick tap and his speed to score between the posts. Ferguson converted his try as well. San Mateo reacted strong to their dire situation and scored quickly with an unconverted try. Live Oak was hanging on to a 14-10 lead with about five minutes left in regulation. But San Mateo would score their final points in injury time on a converted try and walked off the winner, 17-14.
